Cathy Condray and Jim Fletcher, Arkadelphia, AR in memory of "Browning".
Cathy writes:
As volunteers, we have heard that a severely starved horse may not make it. Tom and Polly remind us, try to prepare us for that possibility. We have known this in our heads; being unable to save Browning brought understanding to a whole new level. Over the last three years, we have witnessed many horses weak and frail from starvation, with broken bodies, broken hearts and broken spirits. With each severe case, we saw days of recovery, regression, minute improvements. Eventually there was healthy weight, shiny coats and a relaxed sigh as soft, trusting eyes were drowsily closed in response to gentle grooming and handling.
Losing Browning brought a new depth of realization and pain. The disbelief, heartbreak, disappointment, hurt, tears, frustration and anger felt bottomless. But, also bottomless was the commitment displayed by Tom and Polly Cates, our vet, Stephanie Bradshaw, our volunteers, and Browning himself. We did our best, and he tried so very, very hard. Spirit strong, he basked in the attention and responded so sweetly to our help. What a beautiful, sweet guy. We knew him only a few days, but our lives are changed. His life made a difference. He never gave up trying, and neither will we. Our commitment remains strong and our understanding is deeper, with more gratitude for the ones that did make it… Betsy, Bob, Anna, Cherokee Brooks.
